New TMNT Beat'Em Up announced
There’s been a ton of news lately that seems expertly designed to hype-up retro gaming enthusiasts like myself. And hey, in all the excitement, I forgot to mention the single biggest one….
They’re making a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat’em up, y’all! This is not a drill!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is being made in collaboration with Dotemu (who brought us last year’s stellar Streets of Rage 4) and Tribute Games (makers of the pixel-perfect Panzer Paladin). This appears to be a revival of the Konami arcade game era of TMNT games, with colorful pixel art, a boppin’ chiptune soundtrack, and character designs pulled directly from the original Saturday morning cartoon. Which is 100%, exactly the game we’ve been asking for!
Judging by the reveal trailer, Shredder’s Revenge appears to be doing everything right. The game is giving off strong Turtles in Time (SNES) vibes, but the sprite work actually looks bigger and brighter here. Those character sprites are just…(chef’s kiss!)
Especially compared to other attempts to reboot Turtle Mania over the past fews years—or is it decades? Good lord, I am old—there is so much promise here. Do you remember the misguided Turtles in Time Re-Shelled remake, or the aggressively ugly TMNT: Out of the Shadows, both for PS3 & Xbox360? As with most all post-90’s TMNT games, they really sucked.
Of course there was one lone exception, the 2007 GBA game from Ubisoft Montreal was actually quite decent. And oh hey, part of the Tribute Games studio actually worked on that game! They also worked on a little beat’em up called Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, so get hyped my friends.
No release date has been announced yet, but TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge will be coming to PC and consoles. You better believe I’ll be looking to pick up a physical copy on Nintendo Switch. Stay radical, my dudes!
